The Difference Between Invisible Braces, Steel Brackets, and Ceramic Brackets

2023-08-01

Nowadays, the mainstream orthodontic braces are roughly divided into three kinds: invisible braces, steel brackets, and ceramic brackets. For experienced orthodontists, braces are just tools for orthodontic treatment, like guns in the hands of soldiers, and there is no difference in orthodontic effect. Which braces to use should be considered from various aspects such as individual's dental condition, treatment time, aesthetic needs, and economic level.

Invisible braces: the first choice of fashionable people

Invisible braces are the newest type of aligners and the most popular among celebrities at the moment. They do not require brackets and archwires, and are used to straighten the teeth by means of transparent plastic braces that cover the entire surface of the teeth with a thickness of only 0.5mm. Transparent braces will not irritate the tongue or oral mucosa, can be removed and worn by oneself, will not increase the difficulty of brushing and flossing, oral hygiene is the easiest to maintain, and the follow-up cycle is relatively longer, suitable for orthodontic treatment in other places or for those who are busy with their work and studies.

Steel brackets: for people with greater difficulty in orthodontics

Steel brackets, our most traditional orthodontic appliances, are divided into self-ligating and non-self-ligating, the most common kind of "braces girl": brackets and arch wires are fixed on the outside of the teeth, and can be seen as soon as you show your teeth. These brackets are the most effective braces, with the widest range of applications and the best price/performance ratio, but they are more difficult to clean and less comfortable than invisible braces.

Ceramic Brackets: Balancing Aesthetics and Performance

Nowadays, for the sake of aesthetics, steel brackets are further upgraded to ceramic brackets that are similar to the colour of teeth, which can achieve semi-invisible effect. It is suitable for people who have the need for aesthetics and have a higher difficulty factor in orthodontic treatment.

At present, the most commonly used orthodontic technologies are labial fixed orthodontic technology and invisible trayless orthodontic technology. This time, we are going to evaluate these two types of braces in terms of aesthetics, comfort, oral hygiene maintenance, and impact on eating.

Evaluation 1: Aesthetics

From a distance, invisible braces and ceramic brackets have good aesthetics, and it is basically impossible to tell that you are wearing braces; however, when you look closely, ceramic brackets are still more eye-catching; and steel brackets are the most eye-catching no matter whether they are near or far.

The order of aesthetics: invisible braces, ceramic brackets, steel brackets.

Evaluation Item 2: Comfort

Because steel brackets and ceramic brackets are glued to the outside of the teeth, the mouth will be a little convex after wearing them, and the skin on both sides of the mouth will rub against the brackets, which will be very uncomfortable and cause discomfort in the first two weeks.

Invisible braces are less likely to cause mouth convexity after wearing, but the skin on both sides of the mouth also has a slight friction feeling, and the comfort feeling is obviously much better.

In order of comfort: Invisalign is the best, with steel and ceramic brackets tied.

Evaluation Item 3: Ease of Cleaning

Invisalign braces are removable, so brushing your teeth as normal is sufficient. Steel brackets and ceramic brackets because of the presence of brackets and archwires, increasing the difficulty of brushing, brackets around the easy accumulation of food debris and bacteria, must be cleaned in a timely manner, the need to use orthodontic special toothbrush, carefully clean the teeth around each bracket, but also with the use of interdental brushes, flossing and mouthwash to help clean the teeth.

The order of cleanliness: Invisalign is the best, steel brackets and ceramic brackets are tied.

Review Item 4: Cost of Orthodontic Treatment

The cost is a big concern for most people and an important consideration, especially for young white-collar workers and students who have just entered the society.

Among them, invisible braces are the most expensive, followed by ceramic brackets, and traditional steel brackets are the most cost-effective. However, the cost of orthodontic treatment is related to the orthodontist, the medical institution, and the region where you live, so there is a difference in the cost of treatment for the same type of braces.
