Traditional mold pickup vs digital port sweep

Traditional mold pickup vs digital port sweep

2023-06-15

Accurate intraoral models are the basis for good dental treatment.

The traditional way to take the mold is to take the working silicone rubber and contralateral silicone rubber inside the mouth, and then replicate the shape of the teeth outside the mouth.

With the application of digital technology in dentistry, digital intraoral impression taking was born. Through intraoral camera, it directly probes into the patient's mouth and scans the maxilla, mandible and occlusion to obtain 3D morphology and texture information of teeth, gums, mucosa and other soft and hard tissue surfaces.

In recent years, the rapid development of intraoral digital impression technology has pushed the dental treatment to digitalization. The way dentists obtain oral impressions has changed from physical impressions to digital impressions, so what is the difference between the two?

1、Patient comfort

Traditional impression taking, strong foreign body feeling in the mouth, easy to lead to dry vomiting and nausea, especially for some patients with laryngitis, especially difficult to take the mold.

Digital impression taking can avoid this problem. The compact intraoral camera, fast impression taking and accurate digital impressions can be obtained in a few minutes, which greatly reduces the time of opening the patient's mouth and makes the patient more comfortable.

2、Accuracy

The traditional taking of the mold, through the silicone rubber or polyether and other materials to make intraoral models, and then inverted mold, plaster infusion, resulting in a greater possibility of error.

Digital intra-oral data is obtained directly from the digital mouth sweep, with high precision and less error.

3、Treatment time

Traditional silicone extraction requires multiple iterations of silicone extraction, inversion and subsequent design and processing, and usually takes about 2 weeks to complete the entire restorative treatment, which is very slow and has a failure rate of up to 30%.

The digital intraoral scanner allows the dentist to scan the 3D digital model of the tooth directly into the patient's mouth and then send it to the CAD/CAM platform for design and processing, which can be done in as little as 2 hours.

4、Dental morphology

The traditional flip mold cannot preserve the morphology of the soft and hard tissues in the mouth.

Digital intraoral impressions, on the other hand, can restore the morphology of the patient's intraoral tissues very well, with true morphological colors and more vivid images.

5、Convenience of customer communication

After silicone rubber mold taking, patients are not able to see their dental morphology data immediately, and often need to imagine and communicate through the doctor's description.

The digital mold taking, such as the intraoral scanner, after the mold taking is completed, the patient can intuitively see their intraoral morphology on the computer, and at the same time, the touch screen design, you can also zoom in, flip, visualize the effect, interactive, more efficient communication.

6、Data storage

Traditional models require a fixed room for preservation, which is often prone to confusion or data loss.

Digital model taking, because the data is saved in the system, can be retrieved at any time, which is convenient for doctors to design the plan and evaluate the treatment effect.
